MAX KELLER is one of the world's leading lighting designers. Since the 1970s, he has played a pioneering role in establishing light as an art form in its own right within the theatre - transforming stage sets into spaces shaped by light and making lighting an indispensable element of theatrical dramaturgy. His creativity and outstanding technical innovations helped lay the foundations for many of the principles and possibilities that define lighting design today.

Throughout his career, Max Keller has worked across every technical, artistic and educational aspect of his profession. In collaboration with companies including OSRAM and ARRI, he developed the first daylight luminaires for use in the theatre. His expertise soon extended beyond drama to major international opera productions. His artistic home, however, remained the Münchner Kammerspiele, with which he has been closely associated since 1978.

Teaching appointments in Germany and abroad gave him the opportunity to share his knowledge with students, including as a visiting professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. Alongside numerous lecture series that took him from São Paulo to Shanghai, Max Keller also established himself as an author. In 1985, DuMont Verlag published his Handbuch der Bühnenbeleuchtung (Handbook of Stage Lighting).

In 1999, Prestel Verlag published Faszination Licht, which subsequently appeared in several German and English editions and was translated into further languages. For many years, it has been regarded as a leading international reference work on lighting for the theatre as well as for other fields in which light is used as a creative medium.

A unique aspect of Max Keller's approach is the importance he places on the psychological effects of colour - often giving them precedence over purely technical considerations. This particular interest also led to the creation of his DVD Eine Reise ins Licht (A Journey into Light).

Max Keller's work has received numerous awards and honours. In 1993, he received the Münchner Theaterpreis, followed in 2001 by the Golden Pen Award and the Distinguished Achievement Award in Lighting Design. In 2005, he was presented with the Opus - Deutscher Bühnenpreis in recognition of his lifetime achievement. In 2015, Max Keller was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Verdienstkreuz am Bande). Faszination Licht was honoured by the Stiftung Buchkunst in 1999 as the best book in the specialist and non-fiction category, while Light Fantastic was selected as one of the Outstanding Academic Titles in 2000.
