Zusammenfassung

Secondary metabolites remain at the heart of natural product research and continue to inspire new approaches to disease prevention, drug discovery, and evidence-based herbal medicine. Bringing together current research from phytochemistry, pharmacology, ethnobotany, molecular biology, and pharmaceutical sciences, this first volume of the two-volume Modern Advances in Secondary Metabolites: From Natural Products to Emerging Technologies explores the remarkable therapeutic potential of bioactive natural compounds while demonstrating how traditional medicinal knowledge can be integrated with modern biomedical investigation.

The chapters examine medicinal plants and their phytoconstituents-including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, glycosides, and other secondary metabolites-with emphasis on their pharmacological activities, molecular mechanisms, and clinical relevance. Topics include herbal therapeutics, nutraceuticals, functional foods, precision medicine, drug development, ethnopharmacology, and innovative pharmaceutical formulations. Particular attention is given to medicinal plants such as Elaeocarpus ganitrus (Rudraksha), along with studies addressing antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and immunomodulatory properties.

The volume also highlights advances in quality assurance, authentication, metabolomics, chromatographic analysis, spectroscopic characterization, and standardization that are strengthening the scientific validation of herbal medicines and improving their safety, efficacy, and reproducibility.

Key Features

. Explores therapeutic applications of bioactive secondary metabolites.

. Examines ethnopharmacology alongside evidence-based herbal medicine.

. Discusses quality control, authentication, and standardization of medicinal plants.

. Bridges traditional medicinal knowledge with modern pharmaceutical research.

Together with Volume 2: Nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, and Environmental Applications, which explores emerging technologies including nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and environmental applications, this volume provides a comprehensive examination of the expanding role of secondary metabolites in modern healthcare and pharmaceutical innovation.

Alpana Joshi, PhD, is a distinguished researcher and academician, currently serving as an Associate Professor at Shobhit University, Meerut, India. She previously served as a Research Professor in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at Jeonbuk National University, South Korea, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the USDA-ARS-FRRL, Utah State University, USA. Dr. Joshi holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from IIT Kharagpur, India, with over 15 years of research experience specializing in molecular biology and genomics. Her research focuses on the intricate mechanisms regulating genetic information and its expression in living organisms. Her expertise extends to gene identification, DNA barcoding, phylogenetic studies, herbal medicine research, and molecular biology and genomics, employing advanced bioinformatics tools for genomic analysis. She has made substantial contributions to scientific research, with numerous national and international publications and the development of multiple GenBank accessions. Additionally, Dr. Joshi is an active reviewer for several prestigious scientific journals.

Subrata K. Das, PhD, is an accomplished academic and researcher in the field of biological sciences, currently serving as an Associate Professor at Shobhit University in Meerut, India. His extensive training and research experience span various biological disciplines, particularly in molecular biology and cell biology, which have laid a strong foundation for his career in academia and translational research. Dr. Das has a robust academic background, having completed his doctoral studies with a focus on biological sciences. Prior to his current position, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, USA, where he contributed to significant research projects. Following that, he served as a Research Professor at Jeonbuk National University in South Korea and held the role of Senior Scientist at the Patanjali Research Institute in Haridwar, India. His diverse experience across different countries and institutions have enriched his research perspective and methodologies. His current research interests focus on phagocytic dysfunction, the development of phagocytosis assays, and drug screening. He has published numerous articles in high-impact SCOPUS-indexed journals, showcasing his contributions to advancing knowledge in his field.

Shiva Sharma, PhD, is a skilled researcher with expertise in materials science, nanotechnology, and drug delivery. She is an Associate Professor at the Shobhit Institute of Engineering & Technology, (Deemed-to-be University), Meerut, India. Her work focuses on designing and engineering biomaterials for biomedical applications, optimizing properties like biocompatibility, mechanical integrity, and degradation kinetics. Dr. Sharma is proficient in nanoparticle synthesis and characterization techniques, including SEM, EIS, PPMS, SQUID, FTIR, and UV, and has a deep understanding of nanoparticle behavior and material interactions. She is working on biosensor fabrication, using nanomaterials and biomolecules for enhanced sensitivity and specificity and assessing biocompatibility with both in vitro and in vivo models. Dr. Sharma is also skilled in computational modeling, leveraging tools like eFTIR, NanoDcal, and MATLAB to analyze material properties and well-versed in regulatory requirements for biomedical devices and materials, ensuring compliance with ISO, FDA, and GLP standards.
