Zusammenfassung

As natural product research becomes increasingly interdisciplinary, secondary metabolites are finding important new applications far beyond traditional herbal medicine.

This volume, Volume 2: Nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, and Environmental Applications of the two-volume Modern Advances in Secondary Metabolites: From Natural Products to Emerging Technologies, examines how advances in nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, materials science, and environmental engineering are transforming the discovery, characterization, and application of bioactive natural compounds.

Contributions explore green synthesis of plant-mediated nanoparticles, antimicrobial and anticancer applications, advanced drug delivery systems, phytochemical profiling, DNA barcoding, machine learning, deep learning, bioinformatics, and intelligent healthcare technologies. The volume further investigates sustainable materials derived from renewable biological resources, demonstrating how plant-based biomaterials and secondary metabolites support environmental remediation, wastewater treatment, pollutant degradation, and circular bioeconomy initiatives.

By integrating analytical chemistry, computational sciences, phytochemistry, and environmental sustainability, the chapters illustrate how emerging technologies are accelerating natural product research while expanding its biomedical and industrial impact. Together they demonstrate that secondary metabolites have evolved into versatile platforms for innovation across healthcare, biotechnology, and sustainable development.

Key Features

. Describes green nanotechnology and plant-derived nanoparticles.

. Explores AI, machine learning, and bioinformatics in natural product research.

. Examines sustainable materials and environmental applications.

. Highlights emerging technologies supporting future drug discovery.

Complementing the foundational coverage of natural products, ethnopharmacology, and herbal therapeutics presented in Volume 1: Natural Products, Herbal Therapeutics, and Ethnopharmacology, this volume highlights the technological advances that are shaping the future of secondary metabolite research.

Alpana Joshi, PhD, is a distinguished researcher and academician, currently serving as an Associate Professor at Shobhit University, Meerut, India. She previously served as a Research Professor in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at Jeonbuk National University, South Korea, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the USDA-ARS-FRRL, Utah State University, USA. Dr. Joshi holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from IIT Kharagpur, India, with over 15 years of research experience specializing in molecular biology and genomics. Her research focuses on the intricate mechanisms regulating genetic information and its expression in living organisms. Her expertise extends to gene identification, DNA barcoding, phylogenetic studies, herbal medicine research, and molecular biology and genomics, employing advanced bioinformatics tools for genomic analysis. She has made substantial contributions to scientific research, with numerous national and international publications and the development of multiple GenBank accessions. Additionally, Dr. Joshi is an active reviewer for several prestigious scientific journals.

Subrata K. Das, PhD, is an accomplished academic and researcher in the field of biological sciences, currently serving as an Associate Professor at Shobhit University in Meerut, India. His extensive training and research experience span various biological disciplines, particularly in molecular biology and cell biology, which have laid a strong foundation for his career in academia and translational research. Dr. Das has a robust academic background, having completed his doctoral studies with a focus on biological sciences. Prior to his current position, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, USA, where he contributed to significant research projects. Following that, he served as a Research Professor at Jeonbuk National University in South Korea and held the role of Senior Scientist at the Patanjali Research Institute in Haridwar, India. His diverse experience across different countries and institutions have enriched his research perspective and methodologies. His current research interests focus on phagocytic dysfunction, the development of phagocytosis assays, and drug screening. He has published numerous articles in high-impact SCOPUS-indexed journals, showcasing his contributions to advancing knowledge in his field.

Shiva Sharma, PhD, is a skilled researcher with expertise in materials science, nanotechnology, and drug delivery. She is an Associate Professor at the Shobhit Institute of Engineering & Technology, (Deemed-to-be University), Meerut, India. Her work focuses on designing and engineering biomaterials for biomedical applications, optimizing properties like biocompatibility, mechanical integrity, and degradation kinetics. Dr. Sharma is proficient in nanoparticle synthesis and characterization techniques, including SEM, EIS, PPMS, SQUID, FTIR, and UV, and has a deep understanding of nanoparticle behavior and material interactions. She is working on biosensor fabrication, using nanomaterials and biomolecules for enhanced sensitivity and specificity and assessing biocompatibility with both in vitro and in vivo models. Dr. Sharma is also skilled in computational modeling, leveraging tools like eFTIR, NanoDcal, and MATLAB to analyze material properties and well-versed in regulatory requirements for biomedical devices and materials, ensuring compliance with ISO, FDA, and GLP standards.
