One night a respected teacher of Israel came to Jesus under the cover of darkness. He possessed knowledge of the Scriptures, the respect of his peers, and a sincere recognition that Jesus' power came from God. Yet he still could not see the kingdom.

Jesus answered him with a single, life-altering requirement: "Unless one is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

In that private conversation Jesus unveiled a clear three-stage pattern of spiritual education that runs through the whole of Scripture.
