His Restoration comedy masterpieces 'The Recruiting Officer' and 'The Beaux' Stratagem' are among the finest plays of the period. In spite of his untimely death to tuberculosis at the age of twenty-nine, Farquhar left a lasting impression on the theatre world of London. His plays had introduced a verbal vigour and love of character that was more usually associated with Elizabethan dramatists of the century before.
