This textbook prepares adult learners for the CASAS Reading GOALS 2 Level E, Forms 929R and 930R reading tests and for vocational training admission reading tests. It includes exercises that help adult education and workforce programs meet the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) reading expectations.
The reading exercises and answer keys in this textbook cover CASAS Reading GOALS 2 Level E standards and align with the test competency blueprint. They address key CASAS competencies, including Community Resources, Health, Employment, and Government and Laws. The activities and practice test also align with the College and Career Readiness (CCR) reading standards. Learners engage with various types of reading texts, including narratives, charts, tables, emails, articles, ads, blogs, websites, signs, labels, and forms.
Overall, the textbook includes six (6) chapters and nine (9) interactive lessons, including one practice test. It applies Bloom's Taxonomy's Six Levels of Objectives and Competencies (Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating) to engage learners in active and rigorous reading tasks that increase their academic vocabulary, reading comprehension, and critical thinking skills. The questions vary from basic to complex to help instructors create reading objectives and activities that emphasize higher-order thinking.
Furthermore, the book teaches learners how to apply the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) reading framework or method to improve their reading comprehension and recall what they read. The reading activities teach and assess learners' comprehension of the following skills:
- Identifying main ideas and supporting evidence
- Understanding academic text and figurative language
- Determining text features and structure
- Comparing ideas and passages
- Determining an author's purpose and point of view
- Making inferences and drawing conclusions
