This two-volume set summarizes the development and current status of "earthquake sciences" as an emerging multidisciplinary science. "Faults" and "earthquakes" are two key players in the game, and interactions of those research areas have been increasing every year particularly in the last two decades. These books summarize important research outcomes in each research field, highlight how research has been integrated for comprehensive understanding of earthquakes, to stimulate interdisciplinary researches for full understanding of earthquake mechanisms and hopefully to save people in earthquake disasters one day in the future. Volume 1 focuses on faults and fault mechanics, while volume 2 focuses on earthquakes and earthquake modeling.
