Johan Hefer is a Chartered Accountant CA(SA) whose entire career ? from his earliest days as a trainee accountant to senior corporate finance and academic roles ? has been shaped by working with and alongside small and medium businesses. Over more than twenty-five years he has seen the same challenges repeat across industries, geographies, and business sizes: capable, hardworking owner-managers running on instinct and goodwill, without the tools or language to build something truly sustainable. He spent six years as a Senior Lecturer at Rhodes University, supervising thirty-one research students, and is a published author with Oxford University Press (SA), contributing 22 chapters across a cost accounting and a financial management textbook. For eight years he ran his own consulting practice working directly with small businesses. He lives in Shelly Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast of South Africa ? and occasionally sells music to choir directors in Alaska.
